A few months ago my wife and I were out doing the couple’s dinner thing at an upscale restaurant here in Dallas. One of the benefits of being part of a couple is you always have someone to eat with. The downside is you feel like you only get to eat with one person. The result was the couple’s dinner. A group of four to five couples that meet once a month in fellowship.

In addition to fellowship, it has turned out to be a great excuse to try new restaurants, drink too much wine and expound on what we think is wrong with the world. One such conversation lead to this question. Can Barack Obama become the forty fourth president of the United States of America? To say we had a heated discussion would be understatement. It is amazing how philosophical people get after few bottles of Pinot Noir. But liquid courage aside our group shared some very impassioned opinions.

What struck me was that at the heart of the entire discussion was not whether or not Senator Obama was a good candidate, but instead whether or not America is ready for a black president. If that is the question at hand let’s look at this another way. If Senator Obama where white would he be the best candidate. Well what makes a good candidate?

  • He went to the right schools and can express a coherent thought.
  • He is a family man with children.
  • He is tall and good looking (don’t believe for a second that doesn’t matter)
  • He is charismatic.

So far so good. Well what about his policies. Well for the most part he falls in line with main stream Democrats. Nothing too extreme to the left or right. Pretty moderate. A few things that make him stand out among the pack is that:

  • He is on record as having been against the war in Iraq from the very beginning
  • He understand the need for a limited withdrawal from Iraq and ending a war not supported by the majority of the country
  • He has a foreign policy plan that will value foreign relations and rebuild fractured alliances.

No he doesn’t have a lot of national political experience, but these days that is not necessarily a bad thing. All in all I think given his charisma, his policies, and the Republicans self destructing behavior played out daily on CNN (and occasionally on FOX) I’d vote for him, and I bet a majority of Americans would too…oh yeah… this was all if he were white….what was that other question again…do you really think America is ready for a black president? I sure hope so.

One Response to “Can Barak Obama win?”

  1. Brenda Fingers Says:

How long have White men in the WHITE HOUSE being running the US?
    It’s time for a change.

    Also
Realize this is probably not the right place to make this commet,
but would like to know, how can Mrs. Clinton manage the affairs of the United States if she cannot manage her own campaign. Not enough money, firing staff, staff resigning, voted for the war. Barak’s is right you have to be right the first time. She has 35 years of experience, but could not plan a successful campaign.

Also the republicans picked John McCain because they have nobody. They don’t want him, why would the rest of us want him as our president.

The republicans are bragging on all their experience - so why is the US in such a mess?

    It’s time for a change.

Also watch out for the war scare tactics (on Fox especially). They are out to make us think that any minute we will be attacked and we are not safe. We we should be according to Pres. Bush and His staff.
